University of Abuja shut down amidst Protest


Authorities of the University of Abuja have asked students to vacate their hostels and leave the premises before 4pm on Tuesday.
Although no formal announcement was made, reports are that the management took the decision after an emergency meeting.
The authorities closed the school following two days of protest by students of the suspended Engineering programme over the non-accreditation of some courses in the school.
 Director of Information and Publication of the Institution, Mallam Waziri Garba, confirmed the development in a telephone interview.
He said, “We have asked students to vacate before 4pm today.”
Garba however declined further comments as repeated calls to his telephone after then were not picked.
The students were protesting against the non- accreditation of their course by relevant agencies of government due largely to the inability of the university management to meet the basic requirements for accreditation.
The Engineering programme just like programmes in the Human Medicine and Veterinary Medicine faculties were established against the advice of the National Universities Commission.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students has declared support for a students.
National President of the Association, Mohammed Dauda, said this in Abuja on Tuesday.
