A regular marshal of the
Federal Road Safety Corps, Olasoji Olaleye, was on Sunday killed by a
passenger luxury bus around the Ososa River in Odogbolu Local Government
Area of Ogun State while controlling traffic in a rescue operation
following an earlier accident.
Olaleye was said to have been thrown into the river by the impact of the speeding bus heading towards Lagos.
An eyewitness, who
pleaded anonymity, said the FRSC official was on the bridge controlling
the towing of some vehicles involved in an earlier accident before he
was killed.
“He was directing
vehicles coming from Ijebu Ode to pass through the opposite lane
alongside other security agents before the luxury bus driver, who was at
a high speed, hit him and he fell into the river,” the eyewitness said.
“How can a man called to
come and save lives lose his own life in the discharge of official
duties? This is sad and terrible,” Omiyale said.
The FRSC chief described
the incident as “the highest level of sacrifice that anyone could make
for the betterment of his fatherland”.
The Divisional Police
Officer of Obalende, Ijebu Ode, Mr. ThankGod Obijiaku, said the luxury
bus driver earlier attempted to knock down a policeman before killing
the FRSC official.
Obijiaku said the luxury bus driver had defied orders to stop before he killed the FRSC official.
The DPO added that the driver, who was saved from being lynched by a mob, had been detained by the police.
The Ijebu Zonal Commander of the Ogun
State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Mr. Hamsat Tommy, said
the accident which occurred before the road safety marshal was called in
to control the traffic, happened at the Ososa Bridge around 6.57am.
